The bridge is still out over the Chagrin River on its namesake road, so we started our ride from Gates Mills instead of North Chagrin Reservation, which lopped about 10 miles off the total.
Most of the really crappy pavement on Chagrin River Road has been patched, except for the stretch just north of Route 87, which is still like an old country cow path. They must have run out of money for road repairs. In spite of that, it's still a fun and fast ride down to Chagrin Falls.
We ended the ride with a climb up Old Mill and a descent of Berkshire. Here are the stats of Old Mill:
- 0.72 miles
- 288 feet elevation gain
- 7.5% average grade, 9.9% max
The elevation at the river is 727 feet, up by the Boulevard it's 1033 feet.

East or west side? The west side sucked 25 years ago and I doubt it is any better now.
We descended the east side and climbed the west side. The pavement is in great shape on the climb.
The 8% grade feels pretty tough, but that's nothing compared to the Blair Road climb. That's going to hurt!
I have a love/hate relationship with both climbs. Though many times wish they were both twice as long. That would be a challenge. TIme yourself from the light pole behind the guard rail to the grey mailbox and submit it ot my blog!! Or going east frpm the No Truck sign to the corner of County Line.
I will hopefully get a chance to ride out there this week and give my best shot at Old Mill. I'm probably heading up to Kirtland Chardon Road today to see if I can do a season's best.
